From meteor showers to planetary conjunctions, January is full of magic under the stars. Get ready for an unforgettable month with Cosmo Guada!
What is a Starlight Reserve?
Guadalajara has the certification of Starlight Reserve, awarded by the Starlight Foundation. This guarantees exceptional quality night skies, protected from light pollution, ideal for astrotourism. If you are looking for different plans, this is your place.
Quadrantid Meteor Shower (January 2-3): A Stellar Start

We start off strong with one of the most spectacular meteor showers of the year: the Quadrantids. With up to 80 meteors per hour, some of them real fireballs, this event is perfect for enjoying the night sky.
- When: Peak activity will be between January 2 and 3. The Moon will be just 15% illuminated, ideal conditions!
- Where to watch: In the constellation Bootes, visible after midnight.
Cosmo Guada Tip: Get away from the city lights, wrap up warm and let the stars surprise you.
Lunar and Planetary Conjunctions: Close Encounters
January brings beautiful conjunctions between the Moon and several planets. Here are the key events:
- Moon and Venus (January 3): The crescent Moon will join bright Venus in Aquarius. You can enjoy it with the naked eye or with binoculars.
- Moon and Saturn (January 4): It will be possible to see the lunar occultation of Saturn from Guadalajara. Saturn will disappear behind the Moon at around 7:00 p.m. and reappear an hour later.
- Moon and Neptune (January 5): Although we will not see the occultation in Spain, the event is worth seeing with telescopes or binoculars.
- Moon and Uranus (January 9): Ideal for telescopes, Uranus will be close to the almost full Moon.
- Moon and the Pleiades (January 10): A spectacle to admire with the naked eye or with binoculars.
Venus at its Best (January 10)
On January 10, Venus will reach its greatest eastern elongation, making it the best time to enjoy its brilliance. It's an event you can't miss.
The Wolf Moon and the Mystery of Comet ATLAS (January 13)
- Full Wolf Moon: The first Full Moon of the year will light up the sky.
- Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS): Although the comet is expected to reach its peak brightness on January 13, it is still uncertain whether it will be visible to the naked eye in the Northern Hemisphere. Stay tuned for updates.

Mars in Opposition (January 16)
On January 16, Mars will be at its closest point to Earth, displaying its characteristic reddish glow. An ideal time to explore its details with telescopes!
Planetary Alignment (January 21)
On January 21, six planets (Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Venus and Saturn) will align in the evening sky. A unique spectacle for astrotourism lovers.
More Lunar Encounters:
- Moon and Spica (January 21): A spectacular closeness between the Moon and this Virgo star.
- Moon and Antares (January 24): Observe the red giant in the constellation of Scorpius.
Closing of the Month: New Moon (January 29)
The New Moon will offer dark skies ideal for observing deep sky objects. An unforgettable experience!
